Rural utilities across the U.S are currently navigating supply chain disruptions that are reshaping the way operational projects are planned, purchased, and deployed. For electric, water, and gas utilities, delays in obtaining computer equipment, networking hardware, and communications systems are creating challenges that extend beyond procurement timelines.

At CSA, we recognize the pressure these disruptions place on our member utilities. Lead times for essential equipment have expanded in recent months, affecting everything from advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployments to cybersecurity improvements and routine IT replacements. In many cases, utilities are forced to maintain aging equipment longer than planned while also adapting project schedules around uncertain delivery windows. For smaller utilities with lean staffing models, the impact is especially difficult.

The challenges are also affecting the day-to-day work lives of utility personnel across various departments. E&O teams are reworking plans based on equipment availability. IT departments are extending hardware life cycles and delaying product updates. Field crews are facing pressure to maintain reliability with equipment that may have been scheduled for replacement months earlier.

CSA is actively working to help member utilities navigate these challenges by streamlining internal processes and strengthening the systems that support utility operations.

“Our focus is helping our members operate as efficiently and strategically as possible in an environment that remains unpredictable,” Richard Adams, Chief Member Services/Member Engagement Officer, said. “That means helping them prioritize resources and making sure our own processes support their goal.”

CSA continues to closely monitor the situation and provide updates to members as new information becomes available. We are also working with suppliers and partners to explore alternative solutions and configurations whenever possible to help minimize disruptions.

We remain committed to supporting our member utilities with customized solutions designed to help them continue delivering reliable service to the communities they serve.
